Whole Pond Seepage Analysis

Seepage is the movement of stored liquid through the soil from feedlot runoff retention structures, manure storage ponds, and lagoons.  With the growing awareness of environmental concerns and the increased regulatory controls being placed on producers, it is increasingly important to determine accurately and efficiently the actual seepage rates of these structures.

The Water Balance Method was developed at Kansas State University to accurately measure seepage rates.  Seepage rates are rapidly measured as the reduction in water depth minus any evaporation.  Changes in water depth are measured continuously and rapidly using float-based water level recorders.  The recorders have instantaneous resolution of 0.0067 inch.  Sensors used for recording depth changes can be programmed to sample depth readings at varying intervals.  Data can be automatically uploaded from the on-site data collector using cellular phone and modem which enables data to be constantly analyzed and evaluated to determine accuracy of testing.

AEA, with the assistance of Kansas State University, has acquired the technology to perform the Water Balance Test for the determination of Whole Pond Seepage rates.  If you are interested in accurately determining the seepage rate of your manure  storage pond or lagoon, please contact us at (620) 756-1000 or (800) 499-5893.
