MOROCCO DAIRY FEEDLOT PROJECT

The U.S. Grains Council and COPAG, an agricultural cooperative in Morocco combined their resources to develop a modern custom dairy calf, heifer, and bull feeding and development facility near Taroudant in Southwest Morocco.  At maximum capacity, the facility is designed to produce approximately 2000 heifers and 2000 bulls on an annual basis.  Baby calves arriving at the site will be fed until market-ready at approximately 16 months of age, and heifers until about 22 months of age.  The heifers will be bred and prepared to calve and enter a milking herd upon departure from the facility.  AEA designed the facilities according to proven standards and specifications, while taking into account the unique requirements of this particular site and the local customs and practices where applicable.  This includes provision for adequate pen and bunk space, climate control, dust control, and optimal cattle flow and handling features, which will contribute to ease of management, minimal upkeep, and animal comfort.

SWINE FACILITY SITE DEVELOPMENT

This project involves sixty or more swine finishing sites of nominally 10,000 pigs each. Engineering services provided by AEA include the site topographic mapping, site geologic investigation and laboratory soil testing. Site design for manure storage/treatment lagoons, building pads, site drainage, sewer lines, and overall earthwork balance are included. Development of the pollution control permit application and nutrient management plan are completed at the outset for each site. Construction related services include computerized stakeout of building and lagoon earthwork as well as compaction control monitoring and quality control monitoring of synthetic single membrane liner installation.

THREE THOUSAND COW DAIRY

This project includes the design and permitting of a new 3,000 cow dairy. Engineering services provided by AEA  include the site topographic mapping, site geologic investigation and laboratory soil testing. Site design for manure solids separation basins and manure storage ponds, building pads, site drainage, sewer lines, and overall earthwork balance are included. The design of simple automated hydraulic flush systems and sand separation and recovery is provided as well. Development of the pollution control permit application and nutrient management plan are completed at the outset. Construction related services include computerized stakeout of building and manure storage pond earthwork as well as compaction control monitoring and quality control.

TWENTY THOUSAND HEAD BEEF FEEDLOT

This project includes the design and permitting of a new 20,000 head capacity beef feedlot in the upper high plains. Engineering services provided by AEA include the site topographic mapping, site geologic investigation and laboratory soil testing. Site design for solids settling channels,  runoff retention structures, bunk and watering pads, cattle movement alleys, cattle receiving sorting and processing facilities, site drainage, sewer lines, and overall earthwork balance are included. Development of the pollution control permit application and nutrient management plan are completed at the outset for each site. Construction related services include computerized stakeout of pens, bunklines, watering pads, mounds and runoff collection system earthwork as well as compaction control monitoring and quality control monitoring of retention basin liner installation.

WATER SUPPLY AND FLOODWATER RETENTION STRUCTURE

This project involves the design and construction of a 200 acre floodwater retention and water supply lake with added recreational benefits. Engineering services provided by AEA include the site topographic mapping, site geologic investigation and laboratory soil testing. Hydrologic analysis of the drainage area and feasibility analysis preceded funding and land acquisition. Detailed geologic investigation is provided of dam site foundation and abutment conditions as well as evaluation of borrow areas. Design of the embankment, primary and emergency spillways, drawdown structures and water supply outlet works are included. Construction related services include computerized stakeout of the embankment and all related components as well as monitoring earthwork placement, compaction, moisture control and constructed elevations.

UNIVERSITY RESEARCH FACILITY

This project involves detailed design of a new swine teaching and research facility for the University of Arkansas. Engineering services provided by AEA include facility schematic and detailed design of totally housed gestation, farrowing, nursery, and finishing buildings. These facilities feature a range of environmental control systems from simple natural ventilation to fan controlled precision environmental control including evaporative cooling systems.

PRECISION ENVIRONMENTS FOR GENETIC ENGINEERING

This project involves trouble shooting existing environmental controls of housing for infant and juvenile goat kids involved in the production of human enzymes in dairy goats through genetic modification. Services included evaluation of existing ventilation and environmental controls and then the development of simple and inexpensive enhancements to provide precision control over ventilation rates, distribution, and heating temperatures.

TROUBLE SHOOTING ENVIRONMENTALLY CONTROLLED SWINE FACILITIES

This project involved the evaluation and recommendations for improvement of ventilation systems in a genetic foundation pyramid. Existing facilities lack controllability over ventilation rates, distribution, and temperature. Initial services involved operator training to elevate and consolidate understanding of ventilation goals and function to allow more effective management of existing systems for a higher degree of uniformity while saving heating energy. Other services related to evaluation and recommendation of practical and cost effective alternatives for improvements to sow cooling and productivity during hot summer conditions.
